My mom and Emery came on Wed. to spend some time with us after Adrian got out of school. It started out amazing... Friday morning I went for my regularly scheduled OB appointment (8:15), nurse visit for the 3rd trimester talk, and NST (non-stress test for baby). My appointment went well, up about 3 lbs, BP was great, but my iron is low (8). The NST was non reactive which means baby boy #5 failed it. They wanted me to go to the Brighton office for a BPP (biophysical profile ultrasound). I wasn't really worried too much at this point because baby was moving and I didn't feel like it was that serious.
I got to the Brighton office and they immediately sent me to the hospital because there was only one sonographer in the office and since I didn't have an appointment they weren't sure when they could see me. Got to the hospital and waited for my 11am appointment. They got me in around 11 and baby failed his BPP. He was making practice breathing movements, but he didn't move his body enough, or move his limbs at all which is called low tone. Also the amniotic fluid was on the low side of where they like to see it. It was 6cm and 5cm is considered super low... like delivery now low. So they took me over to L&D and put me in a room to be monitored though I wasn't admitted. Hooked us up to the monitors and asked a ton of questions. Got an IV in me and took some blood for labs. At this point I was starting to get annoyed because I still didn't know how serious it was looking.
My doc came in and told me that they were going to monitor baby for 12 hours at which point they would redo the BPP and we would go from there. Worse case scenario at this point was baby failed BPP again and they would have to send us to Strong to probably deliver (at 33w) since there is a NICU there. They will deliver at 34 weeks at my hospital, but not before. She told me that baby failed the BPP with a 4/8 or 4/10 depending on which doc you ask. But that the score coupled with the low fluid indicates to her that it looks like the placenta is quickly aging and not working at 100%. This is normal but not this early. If I had been 35+ weeks she said they would probably have delivered me, and that is when it hit me how serious it was. Basically a 4/8 is the lowest you can get before you are talking baby is in distress and or deceased. Still freaks me out. They made the decision to give us the steroid shots just to be safe. They don't give them after 34 weeks generally so this was to cover this last week before then.
So after being on the monitors for a while the resident came in and told me that after talking to Dr. F (my doc) they decided to keep us on the monitors until 6-7pm instead of midnight and if baby boy did well we would be able to go home and come back the following day for a repeat BPP and second steroid shot. She came back after I ate lunch (at 3:20pm) and told me they were happy with how baby was tracing on the monitors so we were going to try to do the repeat BPP before the u/s techs went home for the day.
During the BPP he was still not moving much and it wasn't until the last 10 minutes or so that he moved, did his practice breathing and kicked. The fluid level was slightly better (she didn't give me a number but that is common with baby swallowing and expelling it) so she passed us with an 8/8 or 8/10. :) They discharged us with strict instructions to be back in triage at 1:30pm on Saturday for an NST and repeat steroid shot.
That went really well... baby was lazy for the first 10 minutes and then was reactive and moving and that made them and me happy.
The steroid shots have completely thrown my blood sugars out of whack, so I'm kind of freaking out a little. But it is normal.
So for now the plan is to do weekly OB appointments, twice weekly NSTs, and fluid checks regularly. They don't think we will make it to term, but I think things could end up being much better than they say. For now we are thankful to still be pregnant and doing ok, and especially to still be home!
